It is very important that refugees learn Turkish to ensure their cohesion in where they live.
Matters such as which level the language will be taught at and which language skill will be developed are considered for trainings to refugees.
With the collaboration of WALD and the UNHCR, Turkish language courses was organized in all districts where we provide services through Social Protection Desks in 2019 by the engagement of İstanbul Vocational Training Center and Public Training Centers.
Turkish Language Courses aim to solve the language problem which is the biggest factor of deficit in social cohesion of refugees, support refugees for entering in business and social life and enable them to use their rights easily.
Turkish Language Courses help individuals who learn Turkish at basic level gain self-sufficiency and become successful in their business lives. During the final weeks of language courses organized with the collaboration of İstanbul Vocational Training Center and Public Training Center, participants went out to field and visited many places like greengrocers, stationeries, etc.
Therefore, participants had the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real life.
Turkish Language Courses for Children
Children are the most sensitive and risky groups within refugees. For this reason, social cohesion of child refugees is so important. Education is so important for their lives, since it enables them to establish a safe place against difficulties and traumas that they suffer from and receive psycho-social supports by establishing new social relationships.
As WALD, we aim to help children adapt to coeducation in the new education-training period, reduce difficulties they have in cohesion through education and support their social, psychological and educational developments with our Turkish language courses.
In line with this, refugee children at the ages between 6-12 who live in Bağcılar district were given Turkish Language Courses with the collaboration of WALD Bağcılar Social Protection Desk and Bağcılar Municipality Public Training Center. Courses engaged by teachers from Public Training Center both taught children a new language and supported their social developments.
Puppet shows with different animating techniques were organized for participant children after reading lessons. While puppet games support Turkish speaking skills of children, they also risen their self-confidence.
