Within the scope of activities of Turkey, which is of the UCLG region countries, to fight against climate change at local level, International Conference on Local Climate Action was held in Antalya on March 15-16, 2019. Hosted by T.R. Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, the conference was based on “Project to Support Common Efforts on Climate Change”. In addition to representatives of the Ministry, representatives from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat, UN-Habitat and European Environment Agency and Turkish municipalities participated in the conference.
The best practices on disaster management at local level, low-carbon transportation, green infrastructure, energy and agriculture were shared during the conference which we as WALD was a participant of. At the meeting held within the framework of principle of participation, the role of women, media and the youth on fight against climate change was discussed and facilities for climate financing at local level were assessed.
Making the opening speech of the conference, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin Birpınar, T.C. Deputy Minister of Environment and Urbanization and Turkey’s Chief Negotiator for Climate highlighted that they as the Ministry will continue to prepare action plans on climate at local level and support activities to be conducted on climate. As known, number of Turkish municipalities preparing action plans on climate has incredibly increased in recent years. In addition, the issue of fight against climate change has stood out as one of the primary-intervention fields of local governments
