Strengthening Local Governments and Sustainable Development Goal
UCLG-EURASIA Annual Consultation Meeting was held on May 25, 2023, hosted by Kazan Municipality. At the meeting, WALD Chairman of the Board Dr. Mehmet DUMAN made a speech in which he underlined the difficulties that local governments will face in the coming periods.
Dr. DUMAN stated that the earthquakes that took place on February 6 caused more than 50 thousand casualties in Turkey and about 10 thousand in Syria, and widespread destruction. He stated that as a result of this disaster, approximately 13.5 million people in 11 provinces in Turkey were directly affected and a similar humanitarian crisis emerged in the neighboring country Syria.
Emphasizing that local governments are struggling with post-earthquake challenges, Dr. DUMAN stated that they are trying to provide assistance to those affected by the earthquake, but that important steps should be taken to restore the region. He also stated the importance of addressing the immediate needs of the affected communities.
Underlying that disaster risk reduction and increasing resilience should be given priority in development plans, Dr. DUMAN highlighted that a proactive approach should be adopted in order to prepare for future disasters and reduce their effects.
Representatives from 20 countries participated in the meeting where the main causes of global climate change and environmental degradation disasters were discussed, it was underlined that a sustainable and flexible development model should be promoted.
Emphasizing the necessity of developing strategies and road maps compatible with global trends, he drew attention to the development of cooperation with local governments and non-governmental organizations.
