COP28: Annual Climate Conference Takes Place in Dubai with Worldwide Participation

The United Nations Climate (UN) Change Conference (COP28), held between November 30 and December 12 this year, took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, under the auspices of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

At the event attended by Dr. Mehmet DUMAN, the Chairman of the Board of the World Academy for Local Government and Democracy Foundation (WALD), over a thousand representatives gathered, including delegates from UNFCCC member states, industry leaders, young activists, representatives of indigenous communities, journalists, and other stakeholders.

This process, initiated by the international community coming together to achieve the core goals of the Paris Agreement, focused on COP28 not only urging countries to take stronger climate actions but also emphasizing the need for concrete plans on how to implement these actions. Throughout the conference, various topics were addressed, including the reduction of carbon emissions, transitioning to clean energy, greening urban areas, preserving biodiversity and natural habitats, expanding water reserves, sustainably and comprehensively treating waste and sewage systems, as well as ensuring that all activities are climate-neutral.

Speaking at the beginning of the event, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated, “The world cannot afford delays, indecision, or half measures. I remain confident that despite many differences, the world can unite and rise to the challenge of the climate crisis. Multilateralism remains humanity’s best hope.”

“We need increased capital and reform of the business model of multilateral development banks to massively increase direct support – and to leverage far more private finance at reasonable costs for climate action in developing countries,” he also said.

Some of the significant decisions implemented during COP28 include:

-         Approximately 120 countries supported the COP28 UAE Declaration on Climate, Relief, Recovery and Peace to accelerate actions aimed at protecting human health from the increasing impacts of climate change.

-        More than 130 countries signed the COP28 UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action to support food security while combating climate change.

-        The Global Cooling Pledge, approved by 66 countries, commits to reducing emissions related to cooling by 68% starting from today.

With its participation in this significant event, WALD made a strong contribution to its mission of prioritizing environmental and climate issues, raising awareness in these areas, and promoting international cooperation for a sustainable future.
