DISASTER AWARENESS TRAINING FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES
As WALD Sultangazi Social Protection Desk (SPD), in order to increase disaster awareness among refugee community, “Disaster Awareness Training for Individuals and Families” was held on April 6, 2022, in Sultangazi Municipality Earthquake Education Building.
The training launched with the presentation of “Disaster Awareness for Individuals and Families” by WALD Sultangazi SPD Lawyer and AFAD Trainer Büşra REİSOĞLU. In this program, basic information and concepts about disasters were shared by trainer including common disasters in our country, especially earthquakes, preparations before the disaster, correct attitudes and behaviors during the disaster, what to do right after the disaster and what should be done during the evacuation process. In this regard, it was aimed to create a change in behavior and attitude in terms of raising disaster awareness in the refugee community, measures to reduce disaster risk and taking precautions against disasters.
After the question and answer session, the closest earthquake experience to reality through the earthquake simulation room was provided for participants in terms of contributing to the creation of disaster awareness. After the program ended, one of the Syrian refugee, Abdulmuhim Ahmet, expressed his thoughts regarding his impressions of protection from earthquake. He said in his words that “Since Syria is not one of the earthquake region, I have received such a training for the first time in my life, so I learned how to protect myself and my family when earthquake happen. I had experienced the 2020 Istanbul earthquake, and if I knew what I learned during this training at that time, I would definitely use it at that moment.”
