City Council’s Woman Assembly Scanning Workshop

City Council’s Woman Assembly Scanning Workshop, the event that WALD is among its organizers, was held on 4-6 March 2021. In this workshop, modes of organization for participatory democracy, local governance, gender equality, sustainable urbanization were among the topics discussed. Also, fighting with violence against women, woman-friendly cities, city management, policymaking mechanisms, woman citizenship, woman entrepreneurship, woman labor, migration, cohesion, and UN SDGs 2030, and many other topics were evaluated.

Opening speeches of the event were made by Fatma Şahin, Mayor of Gaziantep & President of UMT; Bülent Özcan, Director General for Financial Cooperation and Project Implementation of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Turkey; Prof. H. Tamer Dodurka, Rector of İstanbul Rumeli University; Prof. Osman Çakır, Rector of İstanbul Aydın University; Nuray Karaoğlu, President of KA-DER, and Mehmet Duman, WALD Chairman of the Executive Board.  

In the event, the session titled “Migration, Cohesion and Woman Assemblies” was moderated by Hülya Alper, WALD Academy Director. Alper shared works, conducted toward women from the local community and refugees. Alper said, "We have created platforms where they can express their problems and have the right of representation by meeting with representatives of the local people within the scope of the City Council Women's Council or the Refugee Council."

Mehmet Duman addressed participants as a speaker in the session of “The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 and Women's Assemblies.” Duman shared the projects WALD carried out in pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals. Duman also stated that woman assemblies are an integral part of sustainable development.
